Whale watching in Fort Bragg

Thousands of gray whales pass this coast every year, and you can watch from the bluffs for free.

Every winter, gray whales migrate between Arctic feeding grounds and the lagoons of Baja California, and they pass close to the Mendocino headlands on the way. Gray whale numbers rise and fall from year to year, so sightings are never guaranteed.

When to see whales

  • December to January: southbound whales, usually further from shore.
  • March to April: northbound whales, often closer in, sometimes with calves later in the season.
  • Summer and fall: humpbacks and blue whales are sometimes reported offshore, though less reliably.

Mendocino County: Pudding Creek Railbikes

Ride a small railbike up the old logging line along Pudding Creek, with a long stop among the redwoods at Glen Blair Junction. The price is per bike for up to two. Some reviewers find the riding time short for the price, so go for the setting.

  • Crosses wooden trestle bridges
  • Layover of about 50 minutes at Glen Blair Junction

How to spot them

Choose a calm, overcast day, get up high and scan slowly with binoculars. Look for a spout: a puff of mist that hangs for a few seconds. Gray whales usually blow several times in a row, then dive for several minutes, so wait and watch the same area.

Boat trips

Seasonal whale-watching boats operate from Noyo Harbor. We found no such trip on GetYourGuide, so contact the skippers directly. Winter seas can be rough: take seasickness precautions, and expect cancellations. Boats are required to keep their distance from whales.

Other wildlife

Harbor seals haul out at Laguna Point, and sea lions gather around Noyo Harbor. Watch too for ospreys, cormorants and pelicans. Pupping seals are easily disturbed, so keep back and keep dogs on a leash.
